Chapter Eight

THE BATTLE

TWENTY of NELSON’s forty men, including its commander Lieutenant Charteris, had been dropped two kms short of the DZ. Charteris made a gentle landing, but there was so little wind the parachute fell around him. Having extricated himself he moved off southwest as planned to meet up with his batman in the other stick commanded by Sergeant Grieve, while the rest recovered their equipment from the containers and made their way to meet him. He realized immediately he was in the wrong place; a nasty moment and he felt lost. He watched other aircraft flying straight and level as though they had yet to drop their sticks and deduced correctly they had been dropped short. He met his men, told them the problem and how if they went north they could still reach their objective.
